Grainger Contracting & Services Awarded $1,061,197.00 Contract for Chiller Replacement at USDA US Salinity Laboratory
Marietta, Georgia – Grainger Contracting & Services, a Marietta-based federal contractor, has been awarded a firm-fixed-price contract in the amount of $1,061,197.00 for the replacement of critical cooling infrastructure at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) US Salinity Laboratory (USSL) in Riverside, California.
The project involves the comprehensive decommissioning and modernization of the facility's legacy cooling systems. The scope of work includes the removal of the existing evaporative cooler, chiller, cooling tower, and associated pumps, followed by the installation of two new high-efficiency chillers and all related appurtenant devices.
As a mission-critical research facility, the US Salinity Laboratory requires precise climate control to maintain its ongoing agricultural and environmental research. Grainger’s execution of the contract includes:
Mechanical & Electrical Upgrades: Installation of new chilled water piping, thermal insulation, and advanced BACnet Direct Digital Controls (DDC), along with necessary electrical distribution improvements and power system studies.
Operational Continuity: Coordinating all utility cutovers and heavy construction activities to ensure no unplanned disruption to laboratory operations.
Testing & Compliance: Performance of comprehensive Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) and functional performance testing in accordance with NETA and UL standards to verify system efficiency and reliability.
"Our team is pleased to support the USDA’s infrastructure needs at the US Salinity Laboratory," said Josh Chavers, Owner of Grainger Contracting & Services. "Replacing large-scale mechanical systems in an active research environment requires careful coordination and technical expertise. We are committed to delivering a modernized system that improves the facility’s energy efficiency and operational resilience."
The US Salinity Laboratory is a key facility under the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS), dedicated to developing sustainable crop, soil, and water management practices. Grainger Contracting & Services is proud to provide the specialized mechanical and electrical services necessary to support the long-term viability of this federal research installation.
